Few of you would remember or know of John Brougham who passed away on the 25th of June after a very short illness , he was 91 years of age.
John joined the ASC in the 1950’s when the club had a workshop In Mitcham, he was a very well respected and a quiet achiever who had a great influence in the Adelaide Soaring Club, the South Australian Gliding Association and The Gliding Federation of Australia now Gliding Australia. John was The President and CFI of the ASC, President of the SAGA and Treasurer and President of GFA with his tenure covering the World Gliding Competitions at Benalla in 1987.
John was Awarded the Helmut Apitz Award by the ASC and The Bill Iggulden Award for services to the GFA.
John was in a Syndicate that purchased the first Ka6 single seater in Australia this was a very high performance Sailplane in its time. In 1962 it was sold to the club and flew the first 500km flight in Australia.
In 1974 John and his Wife Julia, also an ASC member were foundation members of the Aldinga Aero Club on the Aldinga Airfield where Julia learnt to fly Powered aircraft and many of our members now fly to for a coffee and a chat these days.
As an 18 year olds when Reg and I joined the club John made a lifelong impression on us with the way he communicated with, not only us, but all those he was involved with by the way he quietly conversed and passed on Knowledge.
John was a Gentlemen and had a great passion for the ASC and gliding.
He is survived by Julia his wife of nearly 60 years and their two children Richard, Andrea and their Families.
